Guide for emerging Star Actors / Actresses
What prevent you from getting your dream Star ROLE in NOLLYWOOD
This is a Thousand Dollar Question many ambitious young minds are asking themselves today.
Are you one of the teeming Youths from diverse regions of Nigeria today struggling to become an Active role Player in this lucrative (JOY GIVING) Industry? It is not uncommon for one today to stumble upon your likes on streets of our Major Towns and Cities. Gorgeous looking Girls, Good looking Boys ranging from their late teens to early thirties ready to tell you that they were heading to try their lucks in the competitive Film making Studios of Kano or Lagos can be seen everywhere.
These ambitious Characters share differing backgrounds, origin and age, upbringing and of course differing motives, life experience and exposure. Owing to these diversity therefore, no single work can sum up all reasons responsible for hindering the screen acting wannabes from realizing their lifelong dreams.
In this Write-up however, I tried my utmost in identifying the common factors preventing record successes for these individuals in making it as emerging Stars / Actors.
1) GENDER:
Although Roles are out there for both genders within the activities of the Film industry,
Ambitious Girls tend to be more vulnerable than Male Counterparts on many issues. Largely by
African culture, Ladies are mostly under closer watch by relatives for religious, traditional and social, REASONS for fear of their safety from unwarranted sexual targeting. This matter is however more pronounced from religious view point than from other dimensions.
In a nutshell, girls have been generally observed to have more tough time convincing Parents to late go than Boys in pursuing roles in the Film Industry. Both Genders are therefore advised to get Parents’ consent before setting out in quest for their fair share in the industry
2) AGE:
Age is another factor critical to your taking part in the picnic called acting. Mark you it’s no picnic in its sense. There’s no place in it for example for Applicants below18 years unless accompanied and guaranteed by an Adult relative, preferably Father. So you either wait your time or convince your Parents to introduce you in your journey to the Industry, Period.
Age limitation also implies for overage as one age up to a horizon of 40 and 60 years for Female and Male aspirants respectively. Careerist Actors / Actresses are those who normally start young so that they can attain their prime at mid ages at most.
3) MARITAL STATUS :
You might have at a point back in your life given up hope and committed your life to a now failed marriage. Suddenly all half forgotten ambition of yours gets upon you all over again just to realize you hardly have any remaining chance of contracting an acting job. A broken marriage in many Studios automatically disqualifies a returning Actress who may want to start from where the marriage interrupted with her acting carrier. The ruling for MARRIED WOMEN applies however, only for KANNYWOOD suitors. In this situation you may therefore consider putting up bids with the KANNYWOOD’s Southern counterpart NOLLYWOOD.
Also, Married Women whose Marriages are still intact may not be hired for acting at KANNYWOOD even with consent from their Spouses. So there is always the hard choice between marriage and acting at least in KANNYWOOD.
4) PARENTS’ MORAL / FINANCIAL SUPPORT:
What support are your Parents willing to offer you? This question counts a lot in giving you opportunity for participating in the Film Industry. Parents suppose to be at hand in times of difficulty to give you words of encouragement and assist you with start bills just before you get to supporting yourself. Most supporters other than Parents and close Relatives may use the opportunity to exploit you to his financial or sensual advantage. You must resist making yourself what they term as “Damsel / Lad in distress”.
Where you find yourself at distance with your Parents or have an unsettled issue with them
(God forbid), then you can only consider taking a menial jobs to help with your bills which you must carefully cut to cater only for the necessities. Get to my blog on guide for securing menial jobs in Kano / Lagos Here
5) BASE / CONNECTION:
Unfortunately, Theatre activities are based in turbulent metropolitan towns / cities the type you may not be used to. Many aspiring Artists today are getting themselves exposed to full city life for the first time. Activities abound in these cities cutting across cultures with science and technology driven modern facilities in transport and communications. All these, along with tall buildings high in the skies may impress any new comer as aerie of complexity.
Finding the right directions, the right set of People is a big trouble. Make sure you do some homework before setting up to the city. The bills, the crudity of life are far more far fetch than you imaging unless you’ve been through it before.
Most of these conditions however, are more pronounced in Lagos than in Kano though if you are from the North even Kano life may appear complicated enough.
As a new comer your need an immediate base in form of resident in which to live.
Another thing is the right connection in the Industry. If you are to become any relevant, it has to be through somebody influential in the Industry being it an old acquaintance of yours or a trusted Stranger introduced to you by a Friend or Relative preferably your Parents. This advice goes especially for the Ladies.
6) GOOD RESUME:
Putting it straight your resume says a lot about your Education, Experience, Exposure, Talents, Natural gifts and Highlights on ambitions.
A good combination of all or as many as possible from the above credentials in your resume increases your chances of being noticed in the Industry. You have to realize however that a good resume is only likely to see you into the Audition Room. It’s up to you thereafter, to prove yourself capable of perfectly acting your role in the audition and rehearsals before catching serious recognition.
Though, many resume credentials are acquired over the years, there are still many that are inborn in an individual hence only need to be perfected over the years through practices. Also there are yet other traits that are very visible on first encounter even without any reference to one’s resume. It needs nobody for example to tell others that you are gorgeous, beautiful, charming, smart, sociable and charismatic. Or that you have big clear eyes, smooth skin tone and color, long straight nose, long silky hair, tall and imposing and what have you of other bodily physiques for Men and Women as appropriate.
7) INTEREST AND PERSISTENCE:
These are two factors that keep the driving embers burning in the mind of any opportunity seeker. Like all other Human endeavors, acting role should also be based in interest deep rooted in your mind. It’s alright if you are motivated by an impression left on your mind by your favorite Celebrity as your Role Model. But you shouldn’t let the imagination escape your mind as to how did he make it, how long did it take him, from how many falls did he leap on time to regain stability, what did he invest etc surely you should pity that Guy.
Charge yourself to remain astute even in the face of exploiters, bashers and naysayers that abound both within and outside the Industry's
